Great article. So many people seem to think bilingual children just happen but as you document it is a struggle even when it is an important goal of the parents. The forces against it are so overwhelming that if there isn't a very strong intention it doesn't happen. I often meet Japanese young adults who have a foreign parent but don't speak that parents language and are very sad and regretful about it.
