I have had the same experience teaching in Japan and with my own learning of Japanese and French. Studying is of course useful but at a certain point you need to use it in a meaningful way. I've found in large classes this approach also works but with more peer to peer interaction. There is a lot of supporting literature too especially from Vygotsky and Merrill Swain amongst others.
