I think this is the wrong framing. You later in your article ask "Why would Russia do this?" but I think you didn't really answer. I think it is very hard to answer exactly why, it seems like pride or vanity. Russia and Russians eliminated those connections by deciding to not be a "normal" European country and instead sliding into authoritarian governance internally and aggressive imperialism externally. The social and economic connections were encouraged by the west hoping Russia would go in another direction. That is why there were pipelines and whole industries reliant on Russian natural resources, Russians living and investing all over the west, international investment in Russia, major international events like the world cup staged in Russia... This was a form of detente but Russia couldn't stand being just connected to Europe and the world as a normal country with the influence of say an Italy or a Canada, they want/need to be a superpower and throw their weight around. The responsibility for current affairs in Russia needs to rest mainly with Russian society but as to the why I can't see a logical reason so I think it must be an emotional one.
