Review of Flipgrid Education Website
Flipgrid is a free website, now owned by Microsoft, that allows teachers to make private classes (grids) so that students can post short speaking videos on discussion topics. The teacher and other students can then respond with their own videos or written feedback. The teacher can give marks and feedback directly on the website.
Flipgrid is easy to use both for students and for teachers. Teachers make an account, set up a grid/class and add a topic. Topics can be simply a question or supplemental materials can be provided. The teacher adds students by name or number and sends them the class join code and their student ID. Students simply go to the website and log in with those two pieces of information and then they can start recording videos. QR codes can be generated to ease this process.
Although the videos can be private between the student and the teacher, the strength of Flipgrid is creating a mini-learning community where students watch each other’s videos on the topic and make reaction videos.
There are several benefits to students and teachers. The main benefit is students can get a lot of practice speaking outside of class which is a common problem in foreign language classes. Seeing other student examples and getting feedback from the teacher can help the student improve over time.
